For over 50 years, I have been immersed in classical music and in folk music because they connect with our spirits and our bodies. I have added therapeutic music fairly recently, but the same connection is strong.
I began classical music training at age 6 on piano. After high school, I continued studies at the New England Conservatory. From there I took up performing in a number of folk bands in Detroit and Toronto. I also play violin, viola, accordion, bass, as well as harp which I play for therapeutic music. Today I direct a church choir and perform in a contradance band and a klezmer band. Music drives my spiritual passions and fuels our common humanity.
I recently completed my 45-hour Certified Music Practitioner practicum at Corewell Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan. I played for many individuals in their hospital rooms, from women in labor, to cardiac patients, to hospice patients.
The Music for Healing and Transition Program, Inc. (MHTP) trains and certifies musicians in the art and science of providing therapeutic music for body, mind, and spirit. Why? Music can decrease pain, lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, stabilize heart rate, and more.
